Welcome note

When my husband and I set out to find and take pictures of wheelchair accessible waterfalls in every U.S. state, we were excited about the challenge. We gave ourselves no time limit to accomplish our feat; however, we had one mutually agreed upon rule that dictated how long we would stay in any given area. That rule was to never shiver again. Needless to say, adhering to this rule presented a new challenge. The new challenge was to find a waterfall that was actually flowing. Visiting mid-west and eastern states during months that prevented us from shivering are the same months that are hot enough to dry up streams; hence, little or no water flow for waterfalls. The natural scenery and picturesque landscapes warrant a second visit in the early spring right after the snow melts.

He only needed me...

Pat myself on the back. Thank you. Thank you. All Bob needed was me! I left him today in good spirits. He was socializing with people. He remembered the zip zip zippy saying. He was laughing and smiling as I left.

We went to the church service today. At first, he didn't want to go, then he thanked me for making him go. He sang. He greeted. (He is the mayor, ya know.) That's all he needed. Just like I needed a jolt in the butt to get moving the other day; that's what my t needed. There is no worry, on my part, for when he comes home. He is well aware of my challenges too as before. He knows his limits and memory issues, and he expresses what he needs to do to help himself. These therapists need to spend a day with me ;) hahaha...

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for the good future that You have prepared for me. Today I choose to come into agreement with Your Word and declare Your blessing over my life. Keep me close to You as I surrender every area of my life to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!"

17 days to go...Bob finally smiled. when I arrived, Bob was playing a form of Keno that the VA plays as a group activity every Saturday. He was looking so serious, but it wasn't because he was concentrating. He's just not happy. However, before I left for the evening, he was laughing, and he was making others laugh too-mission accomplished.

One lady that he has played games with for weeks (she's 86 and has been there since May 09) told me he doesn't talk to too many people, and he doesn't come out of his room much. I told her that he's not allowed to do that anymore. Again, by the time I left, she was discussing their itinerary for the week. Also, every time he sees her he has to recite with his hands in the air, fingers spread apart, "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!" He giggled every time he said it. I had him say it at least 20 times before I left.

A little history behind the above saying...I did a skit as a cheerleader in high school. I was one of the seven dwarfs-Happy. Needless to say, my line in the skit was to enthusiastically shout, "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!" I never forgot it. The things we never forget!

Thanks to all of you who sent encouraging cards to Bob. They were read to him by a nurse; however, I read them to him again. The encouraging words served a dual purpose. I was inspired as well as my t. Thank you.

18 DAYS TO GO...

I want to dedicate today's blog to all of Bob's friends and family. We want to thank you for your continual love and support throughout his hospitalization and recovery. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Bob Pirie Fund. I don't know who has deposited money into it. There are deposits, it seems weekly. Thank you. Thank you. I don't think the medical bills will stop any time soon. :( I want to thank my kids for hanging in there and doing extra work helping me in and out of hotels and hospitals. I know it's not something that most 14 year old boys want to be doing. I'm sure there were a lot more fun things to do. :\ You have all shown me what the true meaning of friends and family is.

Lessons we learn...

Please send Bob anything to encourage him to hang in there these last few weeks of therapy.
Haha...Bob is so funny. I told him tonight that there are advantages to his short memory. I said, "If you get mad at me, I just need to wait five minutes, then you won't remember your mad at me." Bob agreed. Then I said, "I can spend all your money. You'll never remember if I spent it or if you spent it." Bob laughed and said, "I think I'll remember that one, so don't do it." I suppose I shouldn't press my luck.
We learn lessons in the strangest places. It has been brought to my attention that my blogs are sounding like I'm getting frustrated and "burned out". That observation was told to me by more than one reader. More like five or six. I received one email inviting me out to lunch for a break. And, lord knows, I need a mental break. I teetered back and forth; should I go? I should go. Oh, I don't want to be such a bother. On and on, I debated.
Later, Zachary and Coupe, the puppy, were outside playing with the Frisbee. Bentley, the older lazy dog, stood in the doorway watching with a look of "I want to play too". I kept pushing on his butt encouraging him to go out. It took a few attempts. He finally went.
There's my lesson in a hidden place. I need to listen to my own encouragement. I want to go to lunch with friends, and I should go to lunch with friends to take a break. So, I'll push my own rump to get out of the door.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for the good future that You have prepared for me. Today I choose to come into agreement with Your Word and declare Your blessing over my life. Keep me close to You as I surrender every area of my life to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

I talked to Bob!

Please send Bob any types of encouragement you can to help him through these last few weeks of rehab. Anything but alcohol :-)

I finally was able to talk with Bob today. The last I spoke with him was Sunday. He laughed at me for being so spastic about not being able to talk with him. He said he still in the same place, and he still loves me. awwww...he's so cute.

I asked him about his little attempt to get on the VA van. Of course, he doesn't remember. He thinks it's funny though.

A few blogs ago, I talked about a school in PA potentially getting in trouble for remotely activated webcams that were on computers given to all of the students. Well, it didn't take long. The school is being sued for taking a picture of a student in his home, then showing the picture to other staff. dah... tell me that wasn't a lawsuit handed on a platter.

I didn't have any luck trying to get the webcam up and running for Bob and I to talk. You'd think the VA wouldn't be so antiquated when it comes to technology. There are so many resources that the therapists are missing out on that are available on the Internet. That's another reason I want my t home. We'll be able to do brain games that have bigger significance than the ones they are using now.

I'm going through withdrawals...

Please oh please, send Bob things to encourage him to hang in there.

I haven't been able to get in touch with my t for a couple of days to talk with him. YES, I'm going crazy not bring able to talk with him. The nurses station isn't even answering the phone. I know that everything is ok.

I will stay positive as I always have. I feel my conversation with the social worker yesterday was another one of those conversations that all the therapists are making a judgment call one one meeting a day with Bob. I know, they are professionals, but they are making a call about t's future on that one meeting a day. He needs to be home with me.

Bob wants to come home...

Bob is bound and determined to break free from the rehab! Somehow, he escaped through the front door and was caught getting on the VA van. He told the therapist, who found him, that he was just going to take a ride. They are trying to find activities to keep him occupied.

The social worker suggested that he NOT go home, because the therapists fear he will leave our home and be a danger to himself. I told her that anywhere but home is NOT an option. I, also, told her that he wants to come home to get started on his life again. I feel, once he is home, his memory of where he is will come back.

The therapists also said he's not progressing due to his lack of ability to remember what has been taught the day before. Have they ever heard of writing things down? He probably has quite the sour-puss attitude right now too. (That I don't doubt!)

Please oh please, send Bob things to encourage him to hang in there.
