Welcome note

When my husband and I set out to find and take pictures of wheelchair accessible waterfalls in every U.S. state, we were excited about the challenge. We gave ourselves no time limit to accomplish our feat; however, we had one mutually agreed upon rule that dictated how long we would stay in any given area. That rule was to never shiver again. Needless to say, adhering to this rule presented a new challenge. The new challenge was to find a waterfall that was actually flowing. Visiting mid-west and eastern states during months that prevented us from shivering are the same months that are hot enough to dry up streams; hence, little or no water flow for waterfalls. The natural scenery and picturesque landscapes warrant a second visit in the early spring right after the snow melts.

He only needed me...

Pat myself on the back. Thank you. Thank you. All Bob needed was me! I left him today in good spirits. He was socializing with people. He remembered the zip zip zippy saying. He was laughing and smiling as I left.

We went to the church service today. At first, he didn't want to go, then he thanked me for making him go. He sang. He greeted. (He is the mayor, ya know.) That's all he needed. Just like I needed a jolt in the butt to get moving the other day; that's what my t needed. There is no worry, on my part, for when he comes home. He is well aware of my challenges too as before. He knows his limits and memory issues, and he expresses what he needs to do to help himself. These therapists need to spend a day with me ;) hahaha...

"H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!"

17 days to go...Bob finally smiled. when I arrived, Bob was playing a form of Keno that the VA plays as a group activity every Saturday. He was looking so serious, but it wasn't because he was concentrating. He's just not happy. However, before I left for the evening, he was laughing, and he was making others laugh too-mission accomplished.

One lady that he has played games with for weeks (she's 86 and has been there since May 09) told me he doesn't talk to too many people, and he doesn't come out of his room much. I told her that he's not allowed to do that anymore. Again, by the time I left, she was discussing their itinerary for the week. Also, every time he sees her he has to recite with his hands in the air, fingers spread apart, "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!" He giggled every time he said it. I had him say it at least 20 times before I left.

A little history behind the above saying...I did a skit as a cheerleader in high school. I was one of the seven dwarfs-Happy. Needless to say, my line in the skit was to enthusiastically shout, "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, H, A, P-P-Y, I'm happy!" I never forgot it. The things we never forget!

Thanks to all of you who sent encouraging cards to Bob. They were read to him by a nurse; however, I read them to him again. The encouraging words served a dual purpose. I was inspired as well as my t. Thank you.

18 DAYS TO GO...

I want to dedicate today's blog to all of Bob's friends and family. We want to thank you for your continual love and support throughout his hospitalization and recovery. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Bob Pirie Fund. I don't know who has deposited money into it. There are deposits, it seems weekly. Thank you. Thank you. I don't think the medical bills will stop any time soon. :( I want to thank my kids for hanging in there and doing extra work helping me in and out of hotels and hospitals. I know it's not something that most 14 year old boys want to be doing. I'm sure there were a lot more fun things to do. :\ You have all shown me what the true meaning of friends and family is.

Lessons we learn...

Please send Bob anything to encourage him to hang in there these last few weeks of therapy.
Haha...Bob is so funny. I told him tonight that there are advantages to his short memory. I said, "If you get mad at me, I just need to wait five minutes, then you won't remember your mad at me." Bob agreed. Then I said, "I can spend all your money. You'll never remember if I spent it or if you spent it." Bob laughed and said, "I think I'll remember that one, so don't do it." I suppose I shouldn't press my luck.
We learn lessons in the strangest places. It has been brought to my attention that my blogs are sounding like I'm getting frustrated and "burned out". That observation was told to me by more than one reader. More like five or six. I received one email inviting me out to lunch for a break. And, lord knows, I need a mental break. I teetered back and forth; should I go? I should go. Oh, I don't want to be such a bother. On and on, I debated.
Later, Zachary and Coupe, the puppy, were outside playing with the Frisbee. Bentley, the older lazy dog, stood in the doorway watching with a look of "I want to play too". I kept pushing on his butt encouraging him to go out. It took a few attempts. He finally went.
There's my lesson in a hidden place. I need to listen to my own encouragement. I want to go to lunch with friends, and I should go to lunch with friends to take a break. So, I'll push my own rump to get out of the door.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for the good future that You have prepared for me. Today I choose to come into agreement with Your Word and declare Your blessing over my life. Keep me close to You as I surrender every area of my life to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

I talked to Bob!

Please send Bob any types of encouragement you can to help him through these last few weeks of rehab. Anything but alcohol :-)

I finally was able to talk with Bob today. The last I spoke with him was Sunday. He laughed at me for being so spastic about not being able to talk with him. He said he still in the same place, and he still loves me. awwww...he's so cute.

I asked him about his little attempt to get on the VA van. Of course, he doesn't remember. He thinks it's funny though.

A few blogs ago, I talked about a school in PA potentially getting in trouble for remotely activated webcams that were on computers given to all of the students. Well, it didn't take long. The school is being sued for taking a picture of a student in his home, then showing the picture to other staff. dah... tell me that wasn't a lawsuit handed on a platter.

I didn't have any luck trying to get the webcam up and running for Bob and I to talk. You'd think the VA wouldn't be so antiquated when it comes to technology. There are so many resources that the therapists are missing out on that are available on the Internet. That's another reason I want my t home. We'll be able to do brain games that have bigger significance than the ones they are using now.

I'm going through withdrawals...

Please oh please, send Bob things to encourage him to hang in there.

I haven't been able to get in touch with my t for a couple of days to talk with him. YES, I'm going crazy not bring able to talk with him. The nurses station isn't even answering the phone. I know that everything is ok.

I will stay positive as I always have. I feel my conversation with the social worker yesterday was another one of those conversations that all the therapists are making a judgment call one one meeting a day with Bob. I know, they are professionals, but they are making a call about t's future on that one meeting a day. He needs to be home with me.

Bob wants to come home...

Bob is bound and determined to break free from the rehab! Somehow, he escaped through the front door and was caught getting on the VA van. He told the therapist, who found him, that he was just going to take a ride. They are trying to find activities to keep him occupied.

The social worker suggested that he NOT go home, because the therapists fear he will leave our home and be a danger to himself. I told her that anywhere but home is NOT an option. I, also, told her that he wants to come home to get started on his life again. I feel, once he is home, his memory of where he is will come back.

The therapists also said he's not progressing due to his lack of ability to remember what has been taught the day before. Have they ever heard of writing things down? He probably has quite the sour-puss attitude right now too. (That I don't doubt!)

Please oh please, send Bob things to encourage him to hang in there.

23 days to go...

Bob's room was changed from C-111 to C112, across the hall. I don't know the reason, but that's ok. Now he is next to the window. So, he has a nice view of a grassy lawn and gardens.

Only three weeks to go! Discharge date is March 16th. That is two months shy of a full year. Bob went to the hospital May 14th at 2am.

I spoke with my T a few times today. He's finally getting his deep voice back. Until now, his voice sounded muffled. The more his brain heals, the more his voice and speech are coming back. I'll call his cell phone just to hear his voice mail. One of his friends in Fairmont, MN who's in radio, sent me recordings of Bob. I listen to those to give me a smile when I'm missing my T.

He let two messages on my phone today to come pick his up. He didn't want to stay any longer, and he didn't have a car. I waited a few hours before I called back, hoping he'd forget why he called. He didn't forget, but he was ok staying there. He's glad that he only has three weeks to go.

Anger...

Hello Everyone,
Zachary and I drove up and back to WA in the same day. Don't ask me why I would do such an insane thing, but I did.

We stopped and bought T a new laptop, only to find out that the VA, again does not have wireless. When Zachary connected to the Internet last week, he was sitting outside, and a college is directly across the street. He connected to their service thinking it was good for inside the VA...NOT. So, we're back to the same issue as before (see the blog from months ago dealing with the Roseburg VA not having the Internet). Years ago, because of hackers, the VA shut done access to the Internet. I think they need an updated person to resolve their issue.

Bob seems to becoming quite a frustrated and angry person. I think because of his frustration, he is getting angry. I will call the social worker on Monday to see if he can talk with someone.

His short-term memory is still not long. However, I overheard him talking with anther Vet about Zachary, and he told the Vet Zachary's correct age and grade in school. So, memory is there, it's just the immediate short-term that needs work. You know, I'm confident that when he gets home, that will resolve itself.

The Lazy-Boy arrived!

Bob's lazy-boy finally came today. I ordered it January 9th. It was made from scratch. That's why it took so long. I think it'll be worn out before T gets home. :-)

Today's word from Joel Osteen is perfect for keeping a positive attitude toward the future... In the Old Testament there was an Israelite woman who was about to give birth. She had just heard that the Ark of the Covenant that housed God's presence had been stolen. She was so upset about it that she named her baby boy Ichabod, which means "the glory has departed." Notice what she did; she named her future by what was happening in her present. She could have just as easily named him "the glory will return," but she was so focused on the negative, so caught up in where she was at that moment that she defined her future by it.

Friend, don't ever name your future by your present day circumstances. You may have had some hard times in the past, but get that "Ichabod" spirit off of you. It may look like you're stuck in a rut and you don't really see how you could ever rise any higher, but don't speak defeat over your life. Instead, name your future: blessed, prosperous, successful, victorious, healthy, whole, strong, talented, creative, wise. Declare what God's Word says so that you can move forward in the destiny He has prepared for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for the good future that You have prepared for me. Today I choose to come into agreement with Your Word and declare Your blessing over my life. Keep me close to You as I surrender every area of my life to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Web cam suit...

Can you believe it? I felt as though my blogs were getting too short and uninformative, since I'm apart from Bob for a week at a time. So, I decided to peruse the headlines to see what I could chat about. Ironically, there is a lawsuit against a school that distributes laptops to all its students. Believe that! The school is in an affluent district that can afford laptops to all its students. Anyway, the laptops have webcams incorporated into it. The school is able to activate the laptops' webcam remotely to see what is going on inside the home. Story

Here's the ironic part. I woke up this morning, with the notion of buying a webcam for Bob's laptop. The VA in Vancouver has wireless, so to be with Bob, everyday, I'll do it virtually; I'll set up a webcam. (I have one on my laptop already.) Then, I read this story, and thought, "Am I going to have to get permission from the VA to set up the webcam? Will they think I'm spying on their daily rituals? Will I be invading on someone else's private time?" I'm not settig it up to spy. It will only be turned on by T.

PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, I choose to trust You. I cast my cares on You. I give You my plans, dreams, and desires for the future. Thank You for working behind the scenes on my behalf. Give me Your peace as I wait patiently to see Your plan unfold. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

27 days to go...

Of course, I spoke with my T today. Need you wonder? He seemed to be quite confused today. He was going to dinner at the Sirloin House. (I believe that's in Fairmont, MN.)

I believe that when T comes home, his confusion will subside. He has been behind four walls in strange places for nine months now. He can believe he's anywhere he wants. Geesh, right now, many times he thinks he's in Canada. Vancouver, Canada, not Vancouver, WA.

27 days to go. I don't feel like I can "see the light" yet. Maybe when the days get to the teens, then I'll feel as though the time is short.

Once a teddy bear, always a teddy bear...

Calgone, take me away. We are coming to the end of this long journey, at least, being apart from my T. March 16th is the discharge date for Bob to come home. 28 days to go. What ever am I going to do?

Story of the day: Bob told me that when I come to visit, he will be with Eugene. I asked who Eugene was. T told me that Eugene was the guy who tried to kill our dogs last year. Of course, Eugene lives in Iowa. (But, Bob did say that he lives in Roseburg, OR.)

I'm assuming Bob had all three therapy sessions today. I miss seeing my T everyday, but it's nice to see the dramatic changes from weekend to weekend.

T called me three times today on his cell phone telling me that he misses me. He's still a teddy bear, as before. I just want to squeeze and squeeze him until his stuffings fall out. :-)

Stories galore...

I've always said that I'm going to write down Bob's stories that he has told since his mishap. He told me that he makes them up as he goes. I can believe that. He has had some real doozies. He still gets a bit confused. Everyone seems to be related to someone he knows. He is Mayor Bob, you know.

Bob is so cute. He called me today on his cell phone. Michele and Dean had just left to travel home. He had the afternoon to himself. We still can't be apart. I mentioned before, when he was out of town, we'd spend many many hours on the phone. I guess that hasn't changed.

Cows and cattle are on a farm...

Today was another good day for Bob's memory and overall well-being. He remembered things from yesterday, and he remembered what my plans were for the week. He's still adamant, though, that I take his car to him, because, he feels stranded without a vehicle. He remembered that we counted thirty days before discharge. He remembered where we live, not in Iowa. He remembered how many years he's lived in Oregon. He remembered how we met.

Since he was remembering so well, I thought I'd throw the question about the kinds of farm animals are on a farm at him to see how much he's improved. I not only got a longer list than before, but he told me there are cows and cattle. Being the city girl I am, I asked what's the difference. He told me, and he said the males are the ones we want; they make us money. Alrighty then...males it is. Woo-hoo...his brain is healing!

Bob's sister, Michele, and her husband, Dean, come for a visit. They'll be visiting today and tomorrow. I feel better about leaving him for the week. No bets this week! I'll be going to WA for a visit again this coming weekend. I can't stay away.

Amen.

Great day...

Zachary and I traveled to Washington to visit T. He was so "with" it today. It's a day like today, I want to take my T home and call it good. He was cracking jokes. His memory was good. He knew where he was. He agreed to stay until March 16. We numbered the remaining days on a calendar. Bob told me that I better not spring any additional time somewhere else on him when he's finished in Vancouver.

Bob got angry at me because he wanted to go to a restaurant for dinner and drinks. I told him he's not allowed to leave the base. He didn't care if he got yelled at; he wanted to go.

Confusing...

Oh, this is so confusing! One day, I talk to T, and he's out in left field, and then, the next day, I talk with him, he's in the here and now. Confusing, confusing.

Anyway, I get to travel to WA to see him tomorrow. Zachary and I are going. Zachary has been a real trooper, even though, he's been sick since the beginning of January. I had to pull him out of school since he's miss so many days. The doctor thought he had mono; but, he doesn't. Now, Z is being testing to lord knows what else could be wrong. He sleeps 22 out of 24 hours. He vomits all the time. He's eating though, but vomiting at strange times and he's losing weight. He has swollen eyes and big black circles under his eyes.

Oh dear, if it's not one thing, it's another. I made it through my T's ordeal, I'll weather this ordeal too.

The prayer for today says it all...Give me Your peace as I wait patiently to see Your plan unfold.

Search and Rescue...

T told me today that he was on a search and rescue. Everywhere he went, he was searching for me. He finally found me. I was hiding in a room. I'll play hide and seek when he comes home, if he wants. :-) Just another story to show you where he presently is. He's also still in Iowa. He spent all day long there today. I hope he doesn't think we need to move to Iowa after all this is done. I'll agree to Spring and Summer, but not Winter. Hell no, winter is out.

He says that everything is hard. Everything is so confusing in his head. I told him that his brain is a major organ, and it got injured, so it needs time to heal. I'm willing to wait. He thanked me, and told me, that he'd wait for me to heal if the same thing happened to me. awe...he's my sweetheart. I miss my T! Look at the picture above. Wouldn't you?

I submitted an article to Newsweek...

Well, I did it. I submitted my "American Spectator" article to Newsweek. If I don't hear anything after two months, then, I wasn't approved. What's two months, right? Compare to the last nine months, two months is a "drop in the bucket" :-) If you want to read the article, click here. Go to articles and resources, then scroll down to American Spectator.

I wasn't able to reach Bob today. The two times I called, he wasn't in his room. That tells me that he's getting out and socializing, which is good. We didn't call him "Mayor Bob" for no good reason.

Jump starting the brain...

So far, Bob is toughing it out at the Vancouver VA. I spoke with him today shortly after his morning therapy regiment. His brain was so tired. How I know that is because he was totally out "in left field" with everything he said. He also asked me a hundred times if I was coming to the game today. (He said he was going to a football game and wanted me to go too.) So, therapy must be working, if his brain is that tired. That's a good jump start for getting the brain going.

Please send Bob encouragement...

I hope this post finds all those on the east coast and midwest warm and snowblowers full of gas. I've mentioned to many people before, there is a new invention called transportation that can move you out of that nasty weather into bright sunny skies. Write down your feelings about cold weather, so you won't forget about the dreaded weather when the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing in the Spring. The note will remind you of why your intentions of moving are valid.

I talked with Bob on the phone. He sounds to be in better spirits than yesterday. He said his day was filled with lots of things to do, even though, he didn't remember one thing that he did.

Doesn't he look great in the picture above? If you've noticed, we have a problem with saying people's names around here. The girls' names are said, but the boys have nicknames. Daniel is D. Zachary is Z, and Bob is T for T-bear (his screen name).

And the anger flares...

Bob was very mad today when I was leaving without him. Not only was I leaving without him, but I was leaving him stranded with no car or cell phone against his wishes. If I didn't feel bad already, I have a big guilt trip going on now! So, bets are off. I'll be going up to WA again this coming weekend. I'm not good at this "tough love" thing. He's laying a big guilt trip on me by saying that if the "shoe were on the other foot", I wouldn't have anything to do with it. He calmed down when I told him that the government was "footing" the bill.

Bob's memory is getting back to where it was before. When I told him that his discharge date was March 16th, he new immediately how long of a time that is from now.

REQUEST: Please send Bob cards of encouragement to help him through this final leg of his recovery with the Vancouver VA.

Washington weekend...

I drove to Washington to visit my t. My goal was to leave Roseburg on Saturday, but couldn't wait. I left Friday at lunchtime. I think you all know me by now. You know not to lay bets down on my ability to stay away from Bob. You'll lose. Now my plans are to skip next weekend and drive up in two weekends. Think I'll make it? Bets are on.

Anyway...Already, Bob looks so much better. It's nice go see him able to get out of bed without alarms sounding or able to stand up from his wheelchair without an alarm sounding. Also, his memory is becoming longer. He sounds so sure of himself. He told Zachary that he's in trouble now that his memory is returning.

Bob's stories are still good, though. When I commented about his alarms being gone. He said that he still has an alarm inside of his body. He is microchipped. How funny is that!

Should I cry or jump for joy...

I don't know whether to cry or jump for joy. T's discharge date from Vancouver is March 16th. After the dreaded "team meeting" (at least it was in Roseburg), the team decided that Bob would benefit from an extended three weeks. That makes me want to cry, but then again, only those that are deemed "worthy" of progressing are granted an extended stay. First, a patient has to be accepted by having the potential to do well, then, an extension is granted only if the patient has the potential to do exceptionally well. So, I guess I should jump for joy; however, I want to cry. He's so far away. I can't see him everyday as usual.

I took the time, today, to finish writing an article that I'm going to submit for publishing in Newsweek. Wish me luck. Newsweek get hundreds of submissions a month and only four are published. If you want to read it, I will post in on my other website, http://www.professorjan.com/. Click on articles and resources, then click on American Spectator. Read other articles if you wish.

Of course I called...

Need you ask? Of course, I called to talk with my T today. I made it to 4:30pm before calling. Bob sounds good. His voice already sounds clearer than yesterday. He was trying to remember things, instead of giving up so easily, as before. He had a new saying today..."It wasn't anything special." When he couldn't remember something, he'd say "It wasn't anything special." That was his excuse for not remembering. Tricky ;-)

Have I ever spoken about mediocrity? I believe our society has settled for mediocrity as the norm. For example, the standards for education have been lowered so that more students "pass" and graduate with a fifth grade level base of knowledge. Maybe that's why "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" is so popular. If you can answer the questions, one feels smart. So much for "Jeopardy". Anyway, my point for talking about mediocrity is that I'm not settling for my T to be mediocre. He wasn't mediocre before his stroke, so why should I settle for (or for him) mediocre after his stroke? I could settle for "as is" the way the rest of the medical staff has settled. That would be a great dis-service to him. So, I'm going to continue my educational drills forever and a day, if that's how long it takes. I believe the rehab, where he is now, has the same philosophy as me. He's basically in a military "boot camp".

All bets are off....

If you laid down a bet on my will to survive until Sunday to see my T, you lost the bet. I couldn't wait, I called the Rehab Center in Vancouver by lunchtime. I already like the staff before meeting them. When I connected with the nurses station, the nurse said she'll connect me to Bob's room. I said that I don't think Bob will be able to get up to answer the phone. She said she'll transfer the phone back to his room, run to his room to answer it, and give him the phone. Which she did. Now, tell me, do you like them already? I do.

I talked with my T on the phone. He seemed fine. He said the trip didn't seem long. He said he didn't sleep, but I bet he did. Heavens, he left Roseburg at 4am and probably arrived in Vancouver by 7:30-8am. I would have been sleeping before the driver pulled out of the parking lot. :-)

I'm a squeaky toy....

Bob will be leaving the Roseburg VA at 4:00am to be driven to the Vancouver, WA VA Rehabilitation Center. I already miss him. I will drive there to visit on Sunday. Only Sunday, because he will be doing intense physical therapy for 5-6 hours six days a week.

When I told the physical therapist my plan, she looked a little disappointed. She said that fifteen people could be trying to get Bob to do something all day, but when I walk in the room, Bob's eyes light up, and he looks at me like I'm a dog's squeaky toy. He does for me immediately what others have tried to get him to do all day. She said that he has a special look for me that is so sweet to see. aww....my t!

T has remembered for two days in a row where he is going. He thought earlier today that he was going fishing in Vancouver. :-) Later, he said that he thinks the next three weeks will be tough, but fun.
