Welcome note

When my husband and I set out to find and take pictures of wheelchair accessible waterfalls in every U.S. state, we were excited about the challenge. We gave ourselves no time limit to accomplish our feat; however, we had one mutually agreed upon rule that dictated how long we would stay in any given area. That rule was to never shiver again. Needless to say, adhering to this rule presented a new challenge. The new challenge was to find a waterfall that was actually flowing. Visiting mid-west and eastern states during months that prevented us from shivering are the same months that are hot enough to dry up streams; hence, little or no water flow for waterfalls. The natural scenery and picturesque landscapes warrant a second visit in the early spring right after the snow melts.

Trading recall comes easy for Bob...

I ask Bob everyday what he wants me to say in the blogpage. His response is the same response he has for most other questions I ask throughout the day. He says, "I don't know." His thinking for short-term immediate thinking is not there yet. He still has problems with recalling nouns. If I give him the first letter, he recalls what he wants to say. He can describe what he's trying to recall. He just can't come up with the word.
We went to DQ again. We need to buy some stock in DQ; maybe I'd recoup some of the money I poured into that place.
Bob educated me today on commodity stuff. All of that information just "rolls" out of his mouth. He has no problem remembering any of the ins and outs of trading.

All is great...

Everything is going great. Today's podiatry appointment resulted in good news. Even though my T has drop foot, his one toenail may detach, buthet has healthy blood flow to his feet; the nail will grow back.
Finally, the crazy appointment week is over. Bob stayed awake most of the day the past couple of days. I'm finally understanding the commodity thing, and I'm caught up with myonline class. I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel, for the moment, at least.

Moving right along...

CT results revealed "no change" from the previous CT Scan, which means, there is no further build up of fluid on his brain, which means, as of now, there is no need for another shunt to be put in his head.
Choir practice was tonight. Zachary is going to be playing another trumpet piece with the choir on Sunday. He's excited, but nervous at the same time. Bob face shows that he is proud of Zachary.
Bob is walking more and getting stronger. Believe it or not, he stayed awake the entire day. (except for a short half-hour nap)

There is only success!

Today was a fairly mediocre day. I finally was able to go to the grocery store. It's always nice to send someone else to the store with a list, but it's not the same as when you're able to go yourself. Definitely, though, more money is spent when you go yourself.
Bob's stomach wound is healing nicely, and his IV antibiotics are flowing smoothly without a hitch.
One of my friends on facebook posting a saying that is my new mission statement: There is no quitting. There is no surrender. There is only success! I'm going to post it all over the house.

Baffling, I tell you...

We got the statement today from our OHSU ER visit two weeks ago. You'd think they gave us gold or diamonds. I wish they did. I'd be able to understand the five digit figure that jumped off of the paper like a sore thumb!
Bob and I had a conversation today about writing a book about this past year's adventure. He started to cry, because he doesn't remember any of it, and he's sorry he made me go through it. :-( I don't think my assuring words did any good.
Did I mention, we are going to get T-shirts made saying, "I survived a brain attack" for the One-year Survivor party. We are all survivors!
Bob had a CT Scan done today. Hopefully, we have results tomorrow saying everything is good. Bob remembered so much today; it gets better and better everyday. I still see changes on a daily basis.

We achieved normal for one day...

I think we had a normal day. From what I can recall a normal day is like, we had one today. What made our day normal was a trip to DQ. They are having a special on Blizzards. If you've followed me on this blogpage, you know I can't pass up an Oreo Blizzard, and a Strawberry Cheesequake for Bob.
We took our Blizzards to the park and enjoyed the beauty of the flowering trees.
Bob played his guitar and sang. He has such a good voice. He talked to his parents who will be coming to the one-year survivor party (see below). He cried after being told this. He also said that he's not going to have a dry eye at all during the party. He is constantly amazed at how many people care about him.
Bob walked more with his walker today. I put the wheelchair out of sight again. Am I bad? Oh well...

Right from the horse's mouth...

Bob said today that everything he does is such a production. His brain takes him through every step ten times before he can take action. For example, to stand up, he needs to look around to make sure everything is out of the way. If there is something out of order, he has to organize it to perfection. Then, he has to lock his wheelchair brakes, then, reorganize. Then, check the brakes again, then reorganize, then try to stand, then reorganize, and on and on.
He says it is so frustrating to him. I can understand, because it's frustrating for me to watch. I feel for him. I assure him that I have patience, and that his brain is healing. Automation will come with time.
We watched "Phantom of the Opera" this evening. He remembered the first time we saw it together. Awww...memories are coming back. :-)

Changing of the tide...

Change of tide...I was the one who said, "I'm taking a nap." It's usually Bob who announces nap time. Today, he followed. :-)

We went on a date today. We went to Wildlife Safari. For those who don't know, Wildlife Safari is a zoo that you stay in your car and drive amongst the animals. Every time you go, you see something different. Today, we saw an elephant washing a car. It sprayed buckets of water on the car with it's nose. Then, it wiped down the car with a sponge. That would have been interesting to see from the inside of the car. The kids in the car got to feed the elephant when it was finished.

Too bad Bob only remembered the day for about an hour afterwards. Hey, we're gaining on the memory time.

Bob used his walker more today. I made access to his wheelchair a little inconvenient. Am I bad?

REMINDER: May 29, One-year Survivor Party for Bob

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Daily routine...

Our day started at 6:30am with the sound of country music playing on the radio. Our goal is to get up and get in front of the computer before the markets open at 7am, pacific time. So far, we have not succeeded. I suppose with a little more training, we'll be able to be on time.

Bob is able to stay awake for the majority of the morning, but he slowly fizzles as the morning progresses. Bob reads some of the news articles that effect the markets, and he claims to be reading his emails. He stares, as he always did, at the charts and quotes. Boy, ask him anything about the quotes and he'll fired back an intelligent answer. One friend/client calls every day to discuss the markets (to get Bob's brain thinking markets); Bob looks and talks so seriously and professionally. It's great to see.

At 10am, a nurse comes to the house to clean Bob's stomach wound; yuk. I stop the IV pump and reload the machine/IV line for the next 24 hour dose. I've been trained to do that on my own.

Mid-day, Bob naps for a few hours, then he's raring to go until 7pm. Bedtime for the evening is usually 7:30-8:00pm. I'm ready at that time too.

T did a little walking with the walker, today. It was a nice day out, so he walked on our new deck to check out the handy work of the construction workers. From what he could see, it met his approval.

REMINDER: May 29, One-year Survivor Party in Roseburg, Oregon.

And the recovery continues...

Day 2 of the new IV pump. All is well. Bob stayed awake for the majority of the day. After sleeping all day long yesterday, you'd think he'd be awake today.

I'm slowly learning about commodities. We have a practicing scenario for both of us to learn, (well...me learn, Bob teach). If it were a true scenario, I would have made $15oo today. Makes me want to play. :-)

I'm also slowly getting back to writing. Today was the first day I felt like a had a moment or two for thinking.

Bob conquered going down and back up two steps today. He looked like he'd been practicing steps many times.

Reminder: May 29: One-year survival party for Bob in Roseburg, Oregon

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Yet another devise...

Bob slept the majority of the day. I'm not sure if it's his brain wanting rest, effects of the continual antibiotics, or lack of physical strength. Maybe it's a combination of all three.

Bob has been given an IV pump now. He will be given his antibiotic through the PICC line continuously with a pump, 24/7 for six weeks. Something else to hinder progress. Positively though, the antibiotic will cure his infection. Also, I've noticed in the past, that when my t is on an antibiotic, his thinking gets clearer.

Bob was mad at me today, because I couldn't convince him that his new office is his office. He doesn't realize his office is in our house. He thinks his office is in another building somewhere.

I also couldn't convince him that we were in Roseburg, Oregon either. I'm not sure what will convince him. Time, I suppose.

I tried to get Bob to walk more today. He is good at it; he just chooses to be safe in his wheelchair.

REMEMBER: One-year Survivor Party on May 29.

Monday, April 19, 2010

Guess what I did...

I bet you can't guess what Bob and I did today...one guess...WE WERE IN THE ER AGAIN! The results from Bob's stomach wound came back. He has a Staph (spelling?) infection. However, the type of staph that it is would not be cured by the antibiotic he was on. So, we had to go to the VA ER for a change in the antibiotic (IV). The first-time dose needs observed for any adverse reactions. Bob had none. Now, the antibiotic can be given at home again.

Bob's stomach wound is getting smaller already. woo-hoo!

hahaha...we were watching "Happy Feet" last night. It is a movie I've seen at least a hundred times. This movie has so much music in it, all songs from the past. I never noticed, until last night, there is a reference to "Chantille Lace". Yeah...The dad says that Mambo will recognize his mom because she has a "wiggle in her walk, and a giggle in her talk".

Don't forget about the One-year Survivor Party on May 29. How many people do you know who have survived a ruptured brain aneurysm?

Sunday, April 18, 2010

I hope no one was watching...

hahaha...If Bob and I were videotaped today, we'd win the grand prize for Funniest Home Video.

We decided to go watch Zachary play ultimate frisbee all by ourselves. He was playing at the high school football field. There is a fence around it, so we couldn't park close enough to see very well. So, we parked, lugged his and my wheelchair out of the car, and we wheeled ourselves to the field. How far? I don't know. But, I'd say, it took us a good part of five minutes to get to our destination.

After watching for a bit, we wheeled back to the car. Now, this is where the funny part starts. To get the wheelchairs in the car, we both grabbed the wheelchair with one hand, and held onto the car with the other, so we didn't fall, and counted to three. We hoisted both wheelchairs in the trunk of the chair. That depleted a lot of strength, but we still had to get in the car ourselves. We both made our way to our seats holding onto every inch of the car along the way. WE MADE IT!

Now, we're going to bed at 7:30pm. That pooped us out, but we did it!

Bob is doing well with the IV antibiotic. I was taught how to do it. That way, home nursing doesn't have to come everyday. They wanted to teach me how to clean his wound too; however, my stomach would not be able to keep my breakfast down if I had to do that. barf...

Run-down of this week...

Sorry, if you were waiting for a post yesterday, my Internet was down.
Well, Bob is home again. Arrangements have been made for him to have IV antibiotics infused at home everyday for six weeks. Also, the wound dressing on his stomach that has everyone baffled is being changed everyday also by a home nursing agency.
If you're wondering about this past week's events, here's a run-down...Monday, spent two hours in the VA ER waiting for care. We decided to go to the Roseburg Urgent Care. There, they lanced Bob's wound on his stomach, drained it, and cultured it. The PA, who took care of him, contacted the neurosurgeons at OHSU, whom put in his shunt back i June '09, to get a recommendation for follow-up care. They said we need to go to the OHSU ER. We (Aunika, Zachary, Bob, and I) packed over night bags for the three hour trek to Portland.
Once there, each procedure had a long wait for results, then consults with either neurosurgeon or general surgeons. Twenty-two hours later, an x-ray, CT scan of the head and abdomen, lancing, blood work, and a spinal tap were completed. When we were about to leave, the doctor said the neurosurgeons found an infection in Bob's tailbone on the CT Scan. In order to leave, I promised to take Bob to the VA ER the very next day to start IV antibiotics. Which I did. By the way, Aunika and Zachary slept in the car for a few hours starting at 5am. The ER nurses put an extra bed in Bob's room for me to get a few hours sleep too.
So, that got us to Thursday. There, we had a consult with a general surgeon who said Bob needed six weeks of IV antibiotics and needed admitted to the hospital. I begged and pouted again for something to be done so Bob could come home instead of staying in the hospital. The doctor agreed to have a PICC line put in.
So, a PICC line was put in on Thursday afternoon. Bob stayed overnight, and antibiotics were infused on Friday. Before we left at 5pm, an antibiotic, that can only be gotten from a pharmacy in Eugene, which is an hour north of Roseburg, is being sent by Gray Hound to our house twice a week for six weeks.
As I write this, Bob is arguing with all of us that he is going to smoke. He's not convinced that he hasn't smoked for almost a year. I wrote a smoking cessation book, so I should exercise some of the activities with him.

another short message

I'm sorry, I have to be short again tonight. I have been in the Roseburg VA ER, then admitting Bob to the hospital all day today. We got there at 930am. He was admitted at 230pm. I finally left at 830pm.

Bob was admitted to have a pick line put in so he could get six weeks of antibiotics at home for a bone infection that was found in his tailbone. It was found on the CT Scan that was done at OHSU.

His stomach abscess is baffling everyone.

One thing I have discovered through this whole week's ordeal is that no one writes good notes. I have to explain everything ten times. I have to explain things that should have been in doctors' detailed notes. Figure that one out.

Once again, I off to bed. Bob was disappointed he couldn't sleep with me tonight. He gets upset easily and a bit anxious when I'm not around. I convinced him it's only for one night, and he was ok.

short post...

Just spent the last 30 hours driving to Portland OHSU, spending 22 of the 30 hours in the ER, then driving home.

Bob has a bone infection in his tailbone, plus a huge lance abscess in his stomach. He had two CT Scans, xrays, spinal tap, bloodwork, and lancing.

I heading to bed. I had two hours of sleep since Monday night.

Day 12?

Sorry folks. I believe this is my first day within the year (maybe my second) that I'm waaayyy too tired to write. We spent 4 1/2 hours in either the VA Urgent Care or the Roseburg Urgent Care. Most of the time was in the VA. After a long time of seeing no movement from medical staff, we decided to go to another urgent care.

The scar on Bob's stomach was continuing to ooze, and the physical therapist told us we needed to get medical attention today. Well, alrighty then...we did. It was lanced. Now we get to follow-up tomorrow again either at the VA or we travel to Portland to have the neurosurgeons who put in the shunt look at it. Fun, fun.

So, good night. I'll give more of an update tomorrow.

Crying comes easy...

Bob gets so emotional over everyone caring so much about him. After church today, many members from the congregation came to him asking how he was doing and that it was great to see him at church. He started to cry, because he can't believe so many care. He began to cry again in the car the more he thought about it.
Being the sap I am, seeing my T cry makes me cry. :-(
After church, we had lunch, then Bob watched TV. I'll give you one guess as to what he watched. Golf, of course. That habit is one thing that hasn't changed. Once a golfer, always a golfer.
Medically, the scar on Bob's stomach, the one he's had since June, is infected and seeping. I noticed it getting inflamed around the edges about a week ago. I kept my eye on it. Today, it popped like a huge pimple. yuk... :p I'll keep watch to see that it dries up. His follow-up appointment isn't for a few weeks.
Bob walked from the bed to the bathroom without assistance this morning. He scared the crap out of me. He was in bed when I left the room to let the dog out. When I returned, the bed was empty and the wheelchair was in the same spot. He has always proven to have a mind of his own.

Day 11

This blogpage has officially been renamed the Bobpage. T misunderstood me this morning when we were talking about the blogpage, and he called it the "Bobpage". So, there ya' have it. It's the Bobpage, which it is, rightfully, a bobpage.

Below is a video of my t singing Boot Scootin Boogie. Watch for the yawns. He was playing the guitar for about an hour-good brain food. He's playing to a cd of "Wide Load". Wide Load is the band he plays in back in Minnesota. The person talking is Brian Langeland, and Randy Koonan is playing the steele guitar. Other band members are Roger, Brad, and Joey.

SORRY, I DON'T KNOW WHY IT WON'T DOWNLOAD.

Day 10...

I was event coordinator today. Bob has a dentist appointment, a podiatrist appointment, a physical therapist appointment, a primary care doctor appointment, and a CT scan scheduled all by the end of April. He's going to be a picture of health.
I'm glad his physical therapy begins on Monday. He's getting too used to sitting in his wheelchair. At one point today, he told me that he didn't want to stand up, he's too lazy. I wonder if the physical therapist has "couple" exercises we can do together. hmmmm...
I think the brain games are already helping Bob's brain heal. He seemed to be more cognitively aware today.

Day 9..

Are we getting some sort of normalcy to our lives, you ask? I'll ask back to you, "What is normal?" Today was the first time I felt like I had extra hours to fill, so, I wrote an article. That made me feel worthwhile. Thank goodness, I work from home. If I had to go to some other brick and mortar building, then, I know my kids are telling the truth. They always tell me I'm crazy. I think I'm getting to the point that I can no longer defend myself against the statement.
Bob slept most of the day. During his awake hours, we did trading scenarios and brain games on the computer. He said he could feel his brain tingling as he thought.
PARTY
There will be a one-year Survival Party, May 29th for those who need more time to plan. That is Memorial weekend, so you'll have a four-day weekend. More details will be coming.

Day 8...

One full week has passed since Bob has been home. Our routine hasn't become habit yet, but we're getting there. Today was an "on" day, for the most part. I'm learning when my t is getting tired and needs to take a nap. When Bob begins to get completely confused to where he is at, and gets adamant about wanting to go home, when we are sitting in our home, tells me it's nap time. When he wakes up after about a three hour nap, Bob is back to knowing where he is and what is going on in the here and now.
Bob showed frustration again about not being able to see clearly. Not seeing clearly prevented him from being able read his music during choir practice this evening. Also, he said he was glad I was driving, because he was confused with the traffic lights; he couldn't see the lights clearly.

Let the games begin...

Let the games begin. Costco magazine had an article in this month's issue about keeping the brain active. It stated that the brain continuously rejuvenates itself, and doing games ranging from playing chess to games found on various websites will exercise the brain. The article stated that doing brain games one hour a day, five days a week for 8-10 weeks can decrease the age of a brain ten years. The article was geared toward seniors, however, from what I have learned over the past year, and what I believe, I say, let the games begin!
Today was an up and down day for Bob. He recognizes that he is confused many times during the day about where he is. Sometimes it brings him close to tears. Hopefully, my reassurance that it will come with time and repetition helps ease his confusion.
Bob's leg strength is improving. He actually crawled up on the bed this evening by putting his knee on the bed first, instead of sitting, then raising his legs onto the bed. woo-hoo!

Message from Bob...

Bob would like me to tell everyone thank you for following his recovery on the blogpage, and thank you for your love, prayers, and support.
Today was a great day. Bob and I treated the day like a normal Monday work day. First, we were late getting up. (Isn't that typical?) Once we got going, Bob studied the quotes and charts on his website until the markets closed. He didn't say much, as always. I never could did get much of a conversation out of Bob when the markets were open in the past, so why did I think it might be different now. Next came an afternoon nap. (Isn't that typical?)
Bob had a good remembering more things, not all things, but more than other days.

Easter joke...

Alright, I'm going to pass on an easter joke. I thought it was cute, but Zachary thought it was very dirty; that's a teenager's mind for ya' though. Joke (could be R rated): What did the egg say to the boiling water? It might take me awhile to get hard; I just got laid by a chick about an hour or so ago. hahahaha....
We almost had a major mishap today. I was taking a cat-nap. I heard Zachary say, "Where are you going?" I turned to see Bob at the top of the steps to go down to the basement. I startled him enough that he headed for his wheelchair. That was a good thing, however, he was trying to walk without his walker or anything to hold on to; he was free styling. Needless to say, he almost toppled over. Oh my heavens, I had the bageebers scared out of me.
Besides that, we had a great Easter. We went to church. Zachary played the trumpet for "Christ the Lord is Risen". It was flawless. This was his first solo without the company of his fellow band members playing behind him. He came back to the pew shaking like a leaf.
T walked up to the choir loft to sing the "Hallelujah" chorus with the choir. That made his day.
Trying to roust Bob out of bed is like trying to get a teen out of bed. He doesn't move very fast. And, being the smart ass that he is sometimes, when I ask why he's not out of bed yet, Bob will say, "Because I'm ignoring you." I think I need the neurosurgeons phone number. I'm going to "bean" Bob in the head. :-)

on and off days...

BoldHappy Easter Everyone
Today is day four of the first week that my t has been home. It is nice not having to worry about driving three hours to visit overnight, only to race home. I'm able to make sure t has a shower everyday. I'm able to work on his cognitive skills knowing his level of knowledge. And, I'm able to keep him smiling when he looks like he's lost his puppy.
One thing that is becoming a pattern is one day is good, then the next day is an off day. Bob is aware of these on/off days, but he stays positive that things will get better and better each day.

Day 3...

I am amazed at Bob's recovery since he's been home. Every day, he wakes up with a clearer head, so it seems. His awake hours are increasing each day.
A friend of ours is coming to the house to help work on Bob's thinking skills. Brian is not only a friend, but a poker buddy too. He is coming to the house to play poker with Bob to get him ready for the next big poker night in a few weeks. My only concern is, will Bob be able to stay awake long enough to win a game or two?
Hahaha...I received an email commenting on my yesterday's blog. I said that Bob couldn't remember what store I was going to. The comment made was, "men, in general, don't remember what stores their wives are going to, but, tell Bob I'm going to a Harley Davidson store to buy him motorcycles parts, and he'll remember that." I'll have to give it a try. I'm almost afraid to knowing that it's probably right.

Memory is baffling...

Memory is a funny thing. Bob can't remember some things past 2 minutes, but other things, he hangs on to. I can't figure it out. We played a game today called Pente. I think, it takes more strategy than chess. We played it a lot over the years. The goal of the game is to either capture ten of your opponents "men" or get five of your "men" in a consecutive row. We played one warm-up game so I could remind Bob of the rules and goal. We've kept an on-going tally of games won. Being the competitive person I am, I thought this would be a good time to narrow the gap we had between us. At last play, Bob had 45 games won, I had 29. You see, I had a few games to catch up. Hey, I'm human! Anyway, the best laid plans don't always work well. Once again, I had to concentrate in order to stay ahead. Bob won three games, I won four. We played for almost two hours. Bob didn't forget once the rules or strategies. But, he couldn't remember from one minute to the next what store I was going to later in the evening.
See, this memory thing is baffling?

50 First Dates...

Did you ever see the movie 50 First Dates? My situation is similar. The only difference is, Bob remembers things in his long term memory. It's the short-term memory that is a concern. We got his hair cut and went to choir practice. He was excited to see all of his friends, and he sang well; however, he doesn't remember doing any of it. I need to find out what foods promote memory. There's a lot of work ahead of us.

Physically, he did great. He walked with a walker into the barber's and into the church for choir practice. He seemed very normal.
