Welcome note

When my husband and I set out to find and take pictures of wheelchair accessible waterfalls in every U.S. state, we were excited about the challenge. We gave ourselves no time limit to accomplish our feat; however, we had one mutually agreed upon rule that dictated how long we would stay in any given area. That rule was to never shiver again. Needless to say, adhering to this rule presented a new challenge. The new challenge was to find a waterfall that was actually flowing. Visiting mid-west and eastern states during months that prevented us from shivering are the same months that are hot enough to dry up streams; hence, little or no water flow for waterfalls. The natural scenery and picturesque landscapes warrant a second visit in the early spring right after the snow melts.

We're back...

WE ARE HOME!
We got the thumbs up from the neurosurgeon to go home. Bob doesn't have to return for a follow-up visit for a few months. He will receive monthly CT Scans at the Roseburg VA, however, which, then will be read by the neurosurgeons in Portland. If they see any concerns, we will be required to travel back to Portland for possibly shunt re-insertion.
The doctor said, today, that Bob's blood vessels have not changed in size since the removal, which means, no extra fluid has built up in his brain. I need to be aware of any changes in Bob's speech, walking, and cognitive awareness. Any deterioration of these things may mean fluid build up on the brain, hence, a new shunt to drain the excess fluid.
The best news, according to the doctor, is the aneurysms have been fixed; so, it is unlikely that Bob will have another ruptured aneurysm. And, he doesn't smoke anymore; that health risk is gone. He's not diabetic. He has a slightly elevated blood pressure. He doesn't drink alcohol in excess. He doesn't do drugs. The only health risk that needs worked on now is the weight.
PARTY
There will be a one-year Survival Party, May 29th for those who need more time to plan. That is Memorial weekend, so you'll have a four-day weekend. More details will be coming.

Going to Canada...

I can't get enough of this video. It amazes me. Bob's such a survivor!

I spent the entire day with my t. I got all kinds of stories about what is going to happen tomorrow. The best story was we are going to Canada to escape the military and get discharged. Then, we're going to go hunting and fishing. What we're really doing is going to a doctor's appointment at 10am, then we gather all of his stuff to go home.
I want to reiterate one statistic that shows the strength of Bob. Sixty percent of people who have ruptured brain aneurysms die either before they reach the hospital or with in 6 weeks. Bob's ruptured brain aneurysm happened ten and a half months ago. God wants him to serve a further purpose, for sure.

M&M's....

Bob singing Chantille Lace...See saturday's blog for details

Dag-nabbit. Bob forgets a lot, but always remembers about M & M's. Bob's sister gave him a bag of M&M's; which, I tried to sneak into my coat pocket. I didn't think Bob was watching. But he caught me. I told him, jokingly, that I just need to wait 5 minutes, and he'll forget all about them. Five minutes passed, I asked him about what his sister gave him. He pretended to have forgotten. He told me that he realizes he forgets, but he didn't forget about the M&M's in my pocket. Damn-it!

We went to church. One hour later, he still remembered about the M&M's in my pocket. So, I shared. I believe some of the memory issues Bob has are typical male memory issues called selective memory, like selective hearing. You know, he can have selective memory, as long as, he remembers the diamonds on my birthday.

Bob sings in public again...

With a little encouragement, Bob sang karoke. He doesn't feel his singing is up-to-par. He's having a difficult time remembering names of songs, but as always, if you begin the song, he knows the rest.
The crowd gathered as he sang Chantille Lace. He still has "it". The video is below!

Two thumbs up going for three...

THE PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT GAVE THE "THUMBS UP" FOR BOB TO BE DISCHARGED ON TUESDAY! Yep, she (the PA) called me telling me that Bob improved by leaps and bounds this week in PT and doesn't need to stay any longer than Tuesday. Lori, Bob's sister, text me today saying that Bob passed all of the PT's assessments, which enabled him to get the thumbs up for being discharged by the PT. She said, Bob started to cry, she started to cry, and the PT got all teary eyed too. When I read about my t crying from happiness, I cried too. Bob wears his heart on his sleeve. He is easy to read when it comes to emotions.
Tuesday, Bob has an appointment to have another CT scan done, then he meets with the neurosurgeons, who hold the final OK for Bob to go home. Keep your fingers crossed that they "sign off" on the discharge and give the "thumbs up" too.

Piglets float.

I learned something today about piglets. It is dangerous for piglets to get pushed out away from the group. A farmer, from somewhere (I didn't pay attention), puts the cold piglet in a bucket of warm water with a life jacket, and it floats in the water to get warm. awww.... piglet video

Bob sounded good again today. His memory was shorter than yesterday, but that's to be expected, as you all know. I'll work on that when he gets home, as you all know that too.

Bob knows...

Bob summed up how he feels and showed how aware he is of what is happening (rather, what has happened) when he quoted the "happy" chant. I started he memory off by saying, "Zip", and t said , "zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy." Bob paused for a moment. I encouraged him to keep going. He said, "I'm all f***ed up. I'm happy happy happy." I don't know about you, but I feel, knowing that about himself will give him motivation to work on brain activities to improve memory. If he wasn't aware, then he wouldn't feel the need to improve.
I talked with the physician assistant today. She is thinking of holding t until next Friday to work on strength. You know, at this point, two more days will not make much difference in improving his strength, so, I think I'm going to put my foot down, and bring him home on Tuesday.

Waltz anyone?

One of my favorite shows started another season tonight. Dancing With the Stars mesmerizes me. Here's another tidbit of information you may not have known about me...I taught ballroom dancing for ten years. Yep, every Sunday for ten years. I taught lots and lots of people. My favorite dance is the waltz. I predict Evan or Nicole will win DWTS
Bob has never danced with me, because he has only known me after my MS advanced enough that I used crutches to walk, and now a wheelchair. I've showed him how the dance posture should be, but my feet have never been able to go in the proper direction or speed. I'm hoping the new MS medication that helps with walking does what it says it will do. (whenever I get it)

Roaming Bob...

Where's Bob? I could not find my t when I got to the VA this morning. A nurse told me he likes to roam in his wheelchair. So, I set out searching; however, I wasn't having any luck. A male nurse went looking for him. It was taking a lot of time. My mind started to wonder if Bob managed to get out of the front doors again, and he was wheeling around on campus somewhere. Finally, the nurse found him way down at the other end of the building looking out at the gardens. I asked what he was doing. He looked so sad and lonely just sitting and staring out the window. (It was raining, so he couldn't go out.) Yesterday was a gorgeous day. We sat outside for a long while.
I am so glad he has only one week to go, and then he's home. His sister, Lori, from Nebraska will be visiting him with his other sister, Michelle, on Thursday and Friday. I'll be back up on Saturday and staying until take-home day on Tuesday. Bob said a few times that he wanted to go home. At least this time, a medical reason of needing monitored helped ease the excuse of having to stay.

fuzzy brain...

I hate to say, but Bob has taken a few steps backwards in the"clear head" category after his surgery on Monday. He seems to be in a cloud thinking and observing all the time. He looks like he's in deep thought. What he needs is brain stimulation. I did a few brain games that seemed to bring him out of his "fog" for a short time. I gave him a list of numbers to repeat forwards and backwards to me. I also mixed up words and numbers. He had to tell me the words first, then the numbers. For example, I said, "skirt, flower, 5, skunk, 7". He had to say, "skirt, flower, skunk, 5, 7"; which, he did.
His posture has also deteriorated. I need to make some exercise suggestions to the PT. I can't wait to get my t home to focus on a program just for him. You're probably all thinking, "Who is this chick?" I've said it before, I believe I know what I'm talking about. I pride myself on being able to individualize programs for people to optimize results, especially, in reading/basic academics. My career background is wellness and education. That "umbrella" covers a wide variety of topics.

I have an emotional malfunction....

I wasn't able to talk with my t today on the phone. I was able to find out that he made it back to the Vancouver VA from the Portland VA hospital. I'm assuming, since was transferred, the CT scan results were ok. I'll be visiting this weekend. I'll find out then.
I think I have some type of emotional problem. I can not go one day; I can't go 24 hours without talking to my t. I start to go through withdrawal. :-\ Literally, I get nervous; my insides get all upset. I get anxious and can't sit still. I always have been that way with t. He always told me not to be so needy. Well...I believe my neediness has taken a whole new meaning.

target "go home" date is the 30th...

I love getting all of your emails giving me encouragement or support. I love it when I receive phone calls doing the same. I especially like it when I'm approached by friends when I'm out in public giving me support and encouragement. I have learned the meaning of a true friend. People who were friends of Bob's that I never met, talk to me like they've known me forever. That gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling. That's a feeling everyone should feel at least once.
The target "go home" date is now the 30th. One of the neurosurgeons called me today (believe that!). A CT scat will be done tomorrow before he goes back to the Vancouver VA. I made an error yesterday. I said CAT scan. sorry for the confusion. Then, another one will be done on Monday. On the 30th, he'll go back to the Portland VA hospital to have a follow-up visit with the neurosurgeons. At that visit, it will be determined whether the shunt goes back in or if Bob heads home. The purpose of the CT scans are to see if fluid is accumulating in the brain; which, the shunt helps to eliminate. So far, though, so good. Cross your fingers and pray loudly.

Everything happens for a reason...What is it? and updates

:-( Bob was supposed to be home by today. Now, the social worker says they want to keep Bob in observation for a few weeks. AAAAAA... If so, I want him transferred back down to Roseburg. He is not going to be too happy about that tidbit of news. He's continuing his PT and OT. He is still doing fine today. Update: Bob will be returning to the Vancouver VA for observation for at least two weeks. The neurosurgeons want to do three more CAT Scans on him before they "clear" him for going home. They want to make sure there is no fluid build up, which would require the shunt to be put back in. Also, because of Monday's surgery, Bob has become weakened, so, he'll be working on PT for his extended stay. He can not come back to Roseburg to be observed. Should anything happen, he'll be too far away (Roseburg is a three hour drive.)
I got some other news today that is disappointing. There is a new drug for MS that is supposed to help with speed while walking. The cost is a little over $1000 a month. My prescription plan will cover it; however, not for three months yet. The drug was approved by the FDA in January; it became available in March; but, it's too new for the drug company to cover it. They may 90 days from now. What's the hold up? It was approved by the FDA. Why does the prescription company have to approve it?

How long will I be nervous?

I was very nervous today when I walked into T's room. He was sound asleep. But, the position that his head was in was was same when he was in the "comatose state" way back in the beginning of all of this. He woke up, but his mind was fuzzy and his responses were very delayed. My stomach was turning as I had flashbacks. The nurse tried to assure me that things were fine, and so did T. Their reassurances were not sinking in.
I left early to come back to Roseburg. Bob needed to sleep, anyhow. I worried the entire three hour drive. As soon as I walked in the house, I called to talk with the nurse. Bob's doing fine. He's tired. He didn't sleep well last night.
I spoke to Bob as well. His memory time seems to have lapsed backwards again; that could be from being tired. Yeah, that's what I'll chalk it up to, being tired.

Surgery successful!

Bob had his surgery today to remove the shunt in his head. He almost had to have it postponed. I forgot that he couldn't have anything to eat or drink. T said he wanted a snack and a cup of coffee. So we went to the dining hall. One bite into the donut, I remembered at 9:30am. Well, the surgeon had a "hissy fit" at 2pm. The surgeons convened and decided to not put t out, but to give him a local anesthetic and meds to really relax him. So, he was awake while they pulled the shunt out of his skull. ewww...

He's doing great. He seems a lot more alert now. It was wonderful to see. Once again though, the surgeon was not positive about where Bob has progressed compared to what was predicted back in May. Why does everyone need to be so negative? T beat the odds. All medical staff should be amazed and show amazement, not shake their heads in wonder.

PARTY
CANCELED1. You are invited to our house Saturday, March 20 at 2pm - whenever for a Welcome Home party for Bob.

surgery tomorrow...

I get so angry every time I think about having told the medical staff at the Roseburg VA about Bob's exposed shunt in his head and nothing was done. Now, it's such an urgency. I wasn't comfortable knowing that the neurosurgeons at the VA were creating an urgency out of Bob's exposed shunt, so I called the OHSU nueroICU doctors who put the shunt in. They told me the neurosurgeons at the VA hospital are the same surgeons at the OHSU hospital. That helps relieve my mind, but I'm still upset that things weren't addressed sooner. You know though, I'll be asking the doctors tomorrow a million questions! grrrrr...
Bob is doing well. One nurse told me, Bob is all smiles when I'm around. She said he looks so happy. awwww...

Too ready to come home...

OMG Bob is "playing" the woe is me card to the hilt with the therapists. He agreed with me when I called him on it. He was working with the Occupational Therapist today who was "babying" him during one of the activities. At one point, I piped in and said, "Bob, if you want the chair in a different position, you can move it yourself." The therapist told Bob that I'm not giving him any slack. Of course not. I haven't yet, and I'm not going to start.

Bob played his guitar. He played a song that was pretty. He didn't know what it was. He said he was just playing. He was so into the "zone" while he played, as usual. His fingers fell asleep, so he had to stop.

I helped him log onto his website, www.lakestradingcompany.com. Really, he didn't need any help. He quickly scanned over the quotes like he knew exactly what he was looking for. He gave me a synopsis of what he saw. What it right? Lord knows! Your asking a person who says, "la la la la" when spoken to about trading.

Bob's stay is extended for one week...Ugh...

PARTY #1 is canceled. Bob will not be coming home on Tuesday. :-( He will be having surgery on Monday to have the shunt removed from his head. It is exposed at the entry point right above his forehead. The medical staff are fearful of infection. He had an xray an CT scan done today; everything is good. So, the shunt will be removed, then they will observe him for a week to see if he retains fluid on the brain. If so, it will need to be replaced. If not, he's good to go. I will be going up tomorrow, then staying for the week.
Bob's second bleed and second admission to the ICU back in May was when it was inserted. At that time, he was on blood thinners, so the wound didn't heal, hence the second bleed. He's not on blood thinners now; I hope it won't happen again. I know it won't happen again. The procedure is supposedly low-risk. Ramp-up the prayers again.
Sorry about no posts the last two days, I moved Bob's office, therefore, everything was unplugged. Getting it reconnected required a visit from a technician from the phone company. Am I addicted to the Internet? I'll discuss that in a future blog.

6 days to go...

I picked up a brochure about avoiding caregiver burnout. I'm going to use it to write an article for eHow. In the meantime, let's see if I pass. The brochure lists five tips to avoid burnout. Tip 1. Learn about the condition or illness. How do all of you feel about the knowledge I've gained about brain aneurysms? Ok, give me a check for #1. Tip 2. Ask for help. My family will give me a double check for this one. #2-check. Tip 3. Take breaks. I work from home. Wherever my laptop will travel, I can go too. I feel being with my t is a break. #3-check. Tip 4. Take care of your health too. I'm getting better with this one. Initially, I slept with my cell phone on my pillow. I would eat every so often. Snacks would suffice. I can't exercise; so cross that off of the list. Being with my t is good for my mental health. Without him, I'm mush. #4-half a check Tip 5. Stay positive-check, check, check, and check again.
I think I've done a good job at avoiding burnout. My burnout only started when Bob was transferred to Vancouver, WA, and I couldn't see him everyday. ;-)
I spoke with Bob this morning. He sounded better than yesterday. He's remembering well, and he's remembering what his daily schedule is suppose to be. Six days to go! I'm doing my happy dance.

7 days to go...

I'm getting all jittery the closer the day gets to my t coming home. It's like getting ready for a first date. Haha...On my first date, Bob's moving in with me. Someone told me once that I'm easy; now, this an unheard of "being easy". But you know what...I don't care. :-)
Even though Bob is moving around more, he is developing a pressure sore on his heel. It is on the heel of the foot that has "drop foot". So, that foot rests a lot more and doesn't move as frequently as the other. It's ironic; I have drop foot on the same foot. :-) Funny too, when the therapist was ordering a foot brace for t, she looked at my brace and asked me my opinion. Adds to my credibility of understanding some of what my t is going through, doesn't it? I can relate.

9 days to go...

My t remembered everything today, except, he is adamant he is in Vancouver, Canada. At one point, I said I was excited there are only nine days left before he comes home; and he said, "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, h, a, p p y, happy happy happy!" I didn't even cue him to say it. He remembered all on his own.
The puppy has been sleeping with me in our bed. T never did like the idea of a dog in the house, let alone on furniture, ever. He told me today that he'll be kicking Coupe out when he gets home. So, my t is back.
I have read many times, that people who have life threatening experiences change their outlook on life. Bob said today that we are going to treat the rest of our lives like we are on one big vacation. I'm down with that. I, myself, have reordered my priorities. For one, when notices or phone calls come in about medical bills, I just let it "roll" right off my shoulders. There are other things that have moved down my priority list, but for those of you who already know me, I'm a rather mellow person to begin with. After the past ten months' events, now, I'm really really mellow.

Career change for me?

I didn't talk with my t today. He must have been busy with his different therapies. During the down-time, I got to thinking about my career change that is a big possibility in the near future. My career change is going to be working along side of my t. No, I'm not becoming a broker. I'm not sure what my role will be, but I'll be in the office in some capacity. Am I willing to do that? Of course. Even though I have a doctorate in education, I'm sure I can incorporate commodities into it somehow. Or I should say, I can incorporate education into commodities somehow.
Some of you may be asking, "What if Bob doesn't want to work with you?" I already asked, and he said he'd love to work in the office with me. Before all of this happened, he mentioned once in awhile about working together. We worked together on his newsletter and other publications beforehand (that's one of the many talents I have; so if you need a designer or editor, contact me). Any suggestions?

I believe the professionals taking care of Bob are coming around to my way of thinking. :-0 I spoke with the social worker at the Washington VA. She feels that Bob's memory will improve once he gets home into familiar territory. She said the "team" feels the same way,and they are more comfortable about him going home. woo-hoo! I guess my persistance has paid off.
Bob was laughing at me tonight because I was chanting "Zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, h, a,p-p-y, I'm happy" It;s good to hear his belly giggle likes he's always had. I was concerned recently about him sliding into depression. I think that is being resolved.

Wow, you all amaze me. I drove to WA to see my t today. He had a stack of mail in his room that took a bit of time to read. He enjoyed listening to me reading each of the encouraging messages that were written. He laughed at some, and got choked up on others. Thank you.
I was able to attend Bob's physical therapy session. He is walking with his walker like he really doesn't need it. He looks like he can throw it to the side and go it alone. I think it's somewhat of a security thing. Time for the cane! Maybe by the time he leaves in two weeks.
I talked with both the OT and PT specialists today. It was interesting to hear the different standpoints from each. One, I could have shaken; the other, I could have hugged. The one, I would have fired; the other, I could have promoted. The PT was so worried about having supervision at all times, like Bob couldn't function at all; and the OT said she took Bob to the kitchen to have him do a few tasks. She said he has difficulty initiating the first step, but once prompted, he got all the rest. She said that is typical of stroke patients. She also said that once he gets home and into familiar territory, he may eventually have no problem. Thank goodness for one positive person! Finally, I'm not alone in my thinking.
Bob is willing to stick it out for two weeks. I won't see him until I pick him up to bring home in thirteen days. Think I can make it? Yes, I can. Lay the bets down.

One would think that I would be getting calmer the closer the coming home date is for my t. Nope! I'm running out of time to get things done. I feel like I did when I was getting close to my due dates when I was pregnant with my kids. Projects need done. The only thing missing is the boost of energy you get from "nesting". I'll take my own advise that I gave t...zip zip zippy, zap zap zappy, h, a, p-p-y, I'm, happy!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the good future that You have prepared for me. Today I choose to come into agreement with Your Word and declare Your blessing over my life. Keep me close to You as I surrender every area of my life to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
