Welcome note

When my husband and I set out to find and take pictures of wheelchair accessible waterfalls in every U.S. state, we were excited about the challenge. We gave ourselves no time limit to accomplish our feat; however, we had one mutually agreed upon rule that dictated how long we would stay in any given area. That rule was to never shiver again. Needless to say, adhering to this rule presented a new challenge. The new challenge was to find a waterfall that was actually flowing. Visiting mid-west and eastern states during months that prevented us from shivering are the same months that are hot enough to dry up streams; hence, little or no water flow for waterfalls. The natural scenery and picturesque landscapes warrant a second visit in the early spring right after the snow melts.

Driving 101...

Drivers beware! No, not really. Bob's dad and I took Bob out for a driving lesson today. We found a big school parking for Bob to drive in circles, do figure-8s, park, and back-up. He did really well. I believe that made Bob feel a little more normal.

Bob's dad and I were a bit nervous, his dad more than me, but Bob did really well. The only thing we could see that only occurred one time is Bob's depth perception was off. He drove a little to close to a car. Bob thought he was 3 feet from the car, when actually he was about one foot from the car.

All-in-all though, Bob drove like he always has. He's a good driver.

Recovery never stops...

My son told me that he spoke with a person whose wife had a few strokes, and that where she was mentally six months after her stroke is all the better she'll recover. (At least, that's what medical doctors and many books have said.) I've heard that so many times, but I don't believe it for one second. If I settled for the level of mental and physical ability Bob was at six months ago, I would have been doing such a dis-service to Bob. How sad would that have been?

I spoke with the only positive medical person that I've come in contact with yesterday. She told me, I need to take Bob back to the VA in Roseburg to show the "Team" of caregivers that there is progression after six months for aneurysm survivors. Then, return next year and the next and then, the next. Not giving up or settling for "as is" not only is an option for the well-being of the survivor, but also for the well-being of the caregiver.

How do I stay so positive? Good question! I believe it has been years upon years of self-assessments and all of the negative life experiences that helped me sort out what I have control over and what I don't. Listening to Jill Bolte-Taylor and Joel Osteen CDs over and over keep me positive too. Bob is such a positive person. That has a huge influence too.

The six-week IV therapy is done! 4:00 today, I detached the tube, shut off the power pack, and put the bag back in the box. Bob was excited. He said he's ready to feel normal. HA! ME TOO!

Duty...

Bob's Celebration of Life party went well. Believe it or not he didn't cry too much. It was nice to see all of his friends show up. As Bob entered the room, everyone stood and sang "For he's a jolly good fellow". It was perfect.

I was so wrapped up in my t that I did thank everyone. I didn't have Paster Daryl say grace before eating. Am I bad?

A few weeks ago, I came across an in-depth meaning of the word duty. This is a good to time to discuss it. Why? Because, I'm bad at taking compliments on something I consider to be my honor and privilege - being caregiver to my t.

Duty: conveys a sense of moral commitments to someone or something. The moral commitment is the sort that results in action and is not a matter of passive feeling or mere recognition. Duty commits without considering the self-interest of the action. It does not suggest that living life of duty precludes one from the best sort of life, but duty does involve some sacrifice of immediate self-interest.

Ciero, an early philosopher, said that duties come from different sources. One, a result of one's personality and another from one's own moral expectations for yourself.

When duty is put that way, it's not an obligation or a responsibility. It's a privilege to be able to fulfill my duty as caregiver to Bob.

Party tomorrow...

Tomorrow is the BIG one-year survivor party, and the crying has already begun. We went to the VA TCU where Bob stayed for five months. I timed it so we arrived at shift change. That way, we were able to see more staff. They were excited to see Bob. The gave him big hugs and encouraging words. Yes, he was choked up.

T's parents arrived today. His sister and her husband arrived yesterday. It's so nice to have them here to celebrate with us.

T walked out on the porch to greet his parents. He did not use any assistance. That was a far cry from how he looked the last time they saw him a year ago. What a good feeling that was!

Sad news-Gary Coleman, an actor, died of a brain aneurysm today. He was only 42 years old.

Results are positive...

Two of three CT Scan results came back today. The head CT result said the fluid on Bob's brain is less than a month ago. No wonder his short-term memory is returning. The abdominal CT result showed that the wound does not extend into the abdominal cavity; which means, no foreign bodies are getting into his body, if he had any foreign bodies. He's had enough antibiotics that he's starting to glow. ;-) The scan of his tail bone is not back yet.

Saturday is the last day for Bob's IV antibiotics. Believe that! It's been six weeks since our lovely 31-hour visit to OHSU ER.

Each day, Bob's physical and mental health are improving. He's slowly moving out of the wheelchair. He's walking more and more without any assistance of any kind.

This and That...

I asked Bob tonight what he wanted me to tell everyone. He said to tell everyone how much we love each other. I told him that they already know that.

Tonight's the last night for American Idol. Who's your favorite? Dancing With The Stars finished yesterday. Now what? The end of these two seasons to me are like the end of football season for many Americans. It sucks.

OMG... Brett Micheals is on American Idol singing. He just had a brain aneurysm just like Bob only one month ago. He looks wonderful, and he's walking normal.

We talked to the doctor Bob had when he was in the TCU Unit at the Roseburg VA. He was one of the people in the group of staff that had me "spitting nails" when I left. I guess he can put his foot in his mouth. T's a far cry from what the doctor told me that day that made me so angry.

Exciting day...

I have been so excited all day today. I was so excited that poor t had to do tricks all day. He remembered things that happened days ago. Talking to him all day was like talking to my t the way it used to be. Anyone who came into the house today, witnessed Bob getting quizzed on memory items. (I should have thrown him a "treat" for every right answer)

Do you remember from a long time ago, I asked Bob what animals were on a farm? Seven months ago, I had to coax him to give me one animal. Today, he rattled off seven, and he even told me what animal is on the farm to get rid of the animal that eats the feed!

After he saw me getting so excited about his memory, he got all choked up too. He would ask me, "Did I get it right?", with a cracked voice.

Bob wants me...

All is good on the western front. Bob's memory is getting longer and longer. He's also remembering where we live and directions to other towns. It's not 100% of the time, but it's a lot better than having an argument and having to prove our location by getting mail and his driver's license out as proof.

My worries about letting Bob go to church without me tagging along by his side was not all for nothing. No, nothing went wrong. This morning, I had to leave the house for a few minutes before my t got in the shower. I ask him if he will be alright getting a shower and doing his morning routine by himself. He said he didn't think he could do it without me getting things that he needs and reminding him of things to do.

So, I got all of his things out, ran through the list of tasks, then left. When I returned, Bob not only did everything that needed done, he was able to put on those awfully tight compression socks. If have never had the privilege of putting compression socks on, it's like putting a round peg in a square whole and making it fit.

Me? A worry-wart?...

I sent Bob to church with friends today. I felt like I did that day a long time ago when I put one of my kids on the school bus for the first time. I was nervous about everything going ok. I worried about his IV pump beeping in the middle of the service. I worried about Bob falling. I worried about him telling far-fetched stories. I worried about his memory. I worried about him not having me around.

As far as I know, things were fine. Bob said he missed me though. Some day I'll stop being a worry-wart.

Test yourself...

Zachary had a concert and BBQ for his high school band this afternoon. Bob and I ventured out to attend. We had an enjoyable afternoon. Bob walked a long way. We didn't take the wheelchair with us, so he wouldn't be tempted to use it.

Curious about my new MS medication? I am too. I haven't seen any obvious difference yet. I have noticed, though, that my legs are aching more. I believe that my legs haven't had nerve conduction for so long that they didn't feel pain of any level. If the medication is working, my muscles are able to send pain signals back to my brain. So...maybe it is working. It's been two weeks. Research shows results from 4-6 weeks.

Test yourself - Short Neurological Test

Negative test results....

Bob's stomach wound culture results were negative. Woo-hoo! Now, a CT scan has been ordered of his stomach to see if there is anything going on inside his abdomen that the nurses can't see. The monthly CT Scan of his head is scheduled for the same day. Keep in your prayers, again, that there is no retention of extra fluid on his brain.

Bob walked without his walker very quickly today during his physical therapy session, and without any assistance, I might add. However, I got the "dirty " looks from Bob when I suggest we donate his wheelchair, because he doesn't need it anymore. The physical therapist said that Bob's balance test improved from a score of 15 out of thirty to 28/30.

DQ again...

We celebrated Bob's birthday tonight with...you guessed it...with ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. I'm telling you, I need to buy stock in DQ so I can recoup some of the money I've dumped into the place.

Bob had somewhat of a down day today. His left leg that has the drop foot swells because of the lack of use. It swelled so much that his pant leg on his jeans (the calf part) was getting tight. I had him sit with his legs elevated all day. It didn't help. He has an appointment tomorrow to get the compression socks.

Hopefully, with the socks and more walking, the swelling will decrease.

Happy Birthday Bob

Today is Bob's 56th birthday. Thank you God for allowing him to be with us another year. I'm hoping he's with us for many many more.

Brett Micheals, Poison's lead singer, was on Oprah today. He had the exact same hemmorage as Bob. The doctors told his girlfriend the same as me. "Call the family, because survival is slim with this type of hemmorage. Brett survived with little damage, and I'm confident my t will too. Doctors on Oprah say that 20% of survivors with ruptured aneurysms have full recovery. Bob's recovery may be slow, but I'm positive. I won't give in.

Bob did a lot of walking with little assistance today. The PT had him walking today carrying his walker. Bob uses his walker sometimes as a security blanket.

What? A normal day...

I actually felt normal today. Well, not so insane, if that's normal.

Bob did a lot of sleeping today. Nothing that I need to worry about though. Every time I entered the room, he woke up. If he didn't, and he looked like he was in a sound sleep, then I'd need to worry. The visions of him not responding when he was in the process of having his second bleed are still vivid in my head. :-(

Bob and I ventured off again by ourselves this evening. I'll give you one guess as to where we went...You guessed it! Dairy Queen! Bob got a root beer float; which is different, and of course, I got an Oreo blizzard.

Bob is retaining more short-term memory. It's coming. Slowly. But, it's coming. He says we live in Roseburg, Oregon, but he follows up that answer with, "That's what you tell me, but I don't believe it." geesh...

Writing well...

Bob and I are writing a letter that will be sent to his clients announcing his return to work. It is harder than I had ever thought about. In fact, I didn't think it would be hard at all.

The reason it is hard is because, when we reread it for proofing, Bob cries. It is so heart-felt and personal, he gets emotion, then, I get choked up. We made a list of what he wanted to include in the letter. I left to tutor. When I returned, Bob finished writing a paragraph. He read it to me. His voice cracked in a few places. At the end, he began to cry saying while tapping on his chest where his heart would be saying, "What I wrote was from inside."

Bob's also reminding me of how well he writes. I did some brainstorming of what words might be used in his letter. I had the thesaurus out listing synonyms for words that might be used. Ha! Forget my ideas. Bob wrote it his way. It was better than I could have ever written. Who's the writer in the family?

Bob's memory was great all day, until bedtime. For some reason, the new addition throws him off guard. He thinks our bedroom is still on the second floor. When I tell him where it is, he doesn't know how to get there. During the day, though, he remembers. The brain is amazing, but confusing.

Survivor: Hero

As I was logging on tonight, my eye caught a headline that said, "Survivor: Heros and Villians." Before reading on to find out what the story was about, I thought of Bob. I've said it before, my t is my hero. He has fought to stay in this world. He is a strong willed individual. He has always been bound and determined to do what it takes to do the right thing. He's always shown such compassion for others and for those less fortunate. By no means is he a Villain. He has defied any prediction made by medical personnel. And, he has broken all odds. (Maybe that's why he's a broker.)

Bob cried at least four times in church. He has become well aware that he is a survivor, and by most statistics, he is amongst the few that survive a ruptured brain aneurysm of his caliper. He told me that he's not used to being the focus of so much attention, and he is overwhelmed. He can't get over how helpful people are to him.

Bob's daily stamina is getting better each day. I think mine is dwindling. I announce to Bob every day, "Nap time!" It reminds me of when I put my children to bed for a nap years ago...When I got tired, it was nap time or quiet time for everyone in the house.

I believe it's time to put away Bob's chair for good. A few times today, I caught him taking a few steps without any assistance from a person or a device.

More stories to tell...

Today was a gorgeous day in Oregon. The bright sun, blue skies, and chirping birds put me in the mood to plant flowers in the porch boxes. I've always loved the window boxes you see in pictures of houses in Germany. I never can make my boxes look so full. One of these years I'll get it right.

Zachary is at his first prom. He was so nervous. He looked so handsome. Almost brought tears to my eyes watching him pose for pictures while thinking of his future wedding day. I know...I'm a bit ahead in my thinking.

Bob had another good day. He walked about 45 minutes. We took prom pictures on the Chamber of Commerce grounds. We had to walk a long path throughout the campus to get all the pictures we wanted, and Bob walked the entire way with no complaints.

Bob still has a tendency to tell stories from information he's heard on TV. I asked him if he ever went to another country. He told me he went to South Africa. Intrigued, I asked for more. He told me he played golf while there. Long bull crap made short, he was watching pro golf on TV, and one of the golfers was from South Africa. What a bull sh....er. That's my t. Creative!

Yes I can! No you can't!...

I got those nasty responses and attitude again today when I suggested to Bob that we go to the school parking lot to practice driving. Bob strongly objected to my accusations that he needs to practice before I trust that he can drive. He rattled off our address, and he gave me directions to our house. I explained that his vision isn't up to par. He adamantly disagreed. I think I'll turn the driving lessons over to Daniel or Bob's dad when he arrives in a few weeks.

Bob remembered detailed information about some people at his church that he wasn't able to remember a few weeks ago. He recognized that his memory is slowly coming back, but isn't completely there yet. Whew...at least he didn't fight me on that issue.

Bob's birthday is on the 19th. Part of the celebration party will be to celebrate this birthday and the one he wasn't able to celebrate last year.

Dwindling wheelchair use...

Today was another first for me. I played a part in "Meet the Fockers". Not really...:-), but I met the parents of the girl Zachary is going to the prom with.

I put Bob's wheelchair in the closet today so he'd only used the walker. Once again, he had a few choice words for me. Tough Love...gotta love it! He tried to guilt me into giving it back by threatening to take my wheelchair away. Try explaining that one to someone who doesn't remember what MS is.

I'm doing bad with my writing today. I'm ending too many sentences with a preposition or verb. Please ignore my grammar. It's too late in the evening to be bothered with. (See...another preposition)

Bob's memory varies from day to day. It depends on if he is tired or not. It also depends on the amount of sleep or if he has eaten. I believe the antibiotics are healing other things besides his stomach wound.

Which, by the way, his stomach wound is healing nicely. The home-care nurse comes only three days a week now, instead of everyday.

365 days...

It was my turn to cry tonight. It was one year ago tonight that my t had his brain aneurysm. He came home from choir practice saying he had a headache, and I didn't think twice about it.

Tonight, I sat at his choir practice, thinking of last year. I held back the tears. But, as soon as we got in the car, I began to tell t what day it was, and I began to cry before I could tell him. He was confused; he wanted to know what he was missing. When I could finally tell him why I was crying, he began to cry too saying that God had a better plan for him.

Aunika, Zachary, and I did a little reminiscing later in evening. I am so thankful God had other plans, because Lord knows, I wasn't done with my t yet either. :-)

I'm going to wake Bob up the entire night tonight, making sure he's ok. He's going to be angry at me by morning. I need to remember, though, that the doctors said Bob's aneurysms are fixed, and he shouldn't have any more brain aneurysms.

We did a few more brain games today. Bob did fine. Speed recall will come with time; he gets frustrated with himself when he can't think as fast as he used to.

He also gets frustrated that his brain openly has a debate anytime he needs to make a decision. A decision about the pros and cons of something that may take the normal person a split second, takes Bob several minutes. He's actually carrying on the argument in his head slowly.

Oh dear oh dear worry worry worry...

Every ailment Bob has scares the "crap" out of me. Think that feeling will subside? Bob was saying this evening he wasn't feeling too great. I instantly became an EMT! Does your head hurt? Are you feeling dizzy? Do you have chills? Do your muscles hurt? Do you feel like you have a fever? Do you think your blood pressure is up? Do you need sleep? Are you hungry? My worries have nothing to do with the fact that tonight is the night before his aneurysm one year ago. And, then, I ignored his complaint of a small headache that wouldn't go away.

Kleenex stock...

My new stock option is Kleenex. I read some of the two hundred emails that I saved for Bob over the past year. I read them to Bob. Every time Bob cries, I start to cry. We're both blubbering goofs. I better stock up on Kleenex.

We talked about some of the pictures that were sent of Bob and his friends from when he was a young pup. He told me some stories that I never heard.

The celebration party will be May 29th at 2pm at the United Methodist Church on Harvard Avenue in Roseburg, Oregon. We will have meatball sandwiches, cookies, cake, coffee, and punch. Also, cocktails by the firepit at our house will start at 7pm. (BYOB) Sodas will be provided.

Happy Mother's Day

Finally, we revived the wii, hoping to make it a daily habit. Both, Bob and I need to gain muscular strength, flexibility, and endurance. Daggone computers, though. It remembered when we were last logged on, how much we weighed, and what our body mass index was. The sad thing was, we were last on 603 days ago. The good thing is, I lost 17 pounds and Bob lost 41 pounds; which brought both of our BMI's down significantly. That's a little motivating for me to keep going.

Another sad thing was the duration of our workout today. We both survived a whopping five minutes. We looked like we worked out for hours. I felt like I worked out for hours. Hey, it's a start.

I haven't noticed any effects yet from my new medication that was just approved in March by the FDA.

Remember: Party for Bob to celebrate living May 29th.

Successful challenges...

Hahaha...we had another funniest home video moment. Bob and I were by ourselves. We decided to cook steaks on the grill. Just imagine two very wobbly people trying to tag team passing off the plate with the steak from wheelchair to wheelchair to the door leading to the deck to the grill. Hey...we did it. Thank goodness we weren't in a hurry.
We also changed the sheets and blankets on the bed. Bob learned how challenging it is to stretch and lunge with weak legs. We were definitely ready to crawl in to relax after we finished. At one point, I told Bob he needs to do military corners, and I was going to check. His response would have earned him at least fifty push ups from the sergeant. :D
Bob's short-term memory is extending into days for some things. Other things, it is still short, but not as short as before - minutes.
Zachary is going to the prom on Saturday. Bob and I took him to get fitted for a tux. He looks so grown-up. Stay posted for pictures.

hmmm....

Believe this, I'm dumbfounded as to what to say. Today was a mellow day. Bob and I sat outside on our new deck. It was quiet and peaceful. The birds were chirping up a storm. Coupe was fishing for salamanders in the creek while Bentley basked in the sun.
Friday is pizza night. We ordered from Dominoes. I ordered two of their lava crunches, which are "to die for". Bob and I scarfed those down before anyone else came to the dinner table. We weren't about to share. Bob did a little conniving. He told me to throw the box away, and no one will even know we ordered them. hahaha...so I did. :D
Bob did a lot of walking by himself today. He's even venturing off without any assistance. He remembered for longer periods of time. woo-hoo

step-two-three, turn-two-three

Bob worked with a physical therapist today who said that Bob is solid as a rock if he is holding onto something, but as shaky as a leaf if he is not. All he needs is time to gain strength, then he'll be good as new. Aunika and Bob were dancing the "jig" as he rotated around in a circle. Too funny.
My medicine was delivered UPS today. It's the medicine that is supposed to help me walk faster. I may see results as soon as two days. It may take four - six weeks. Cross your fingers. What it does is fill-in the holes in the nerve covering that was eaten away by my own immune system. My muscles don't get a full signal from my brain to move. Filling in the holes will give my muscles a more direct signal. The drug is called Ampyra by Acordia. We had stock in the company years ago. Too bad we sold it.

Almost one year...

May 14th was the day Bob had his ruptured brain aneurysm. It was a Wednesday night at 2am in the morning. It's hard to believe it has almost been one year. My how time flies when your having fun! :-p

Bob had a good day today. he went to the dentist. No cavities! I guess he didn't have too many sweets over the year. :-)

Bob walked with a cane for a short distance. Woo-hoo! He did well. The cane he used was given to me by a friend who used it to guide cattle. How appropriate for Bob to use it!

May 29th - Party at the United Methodist Church in Roseburg. Party 2 - Cocktails at the firepit at our house at 8pm.

It's crying time again...

Oh my goodness, Bob received some emails today from friends who were responding to the RSVP request for the one-year survivor party. Even though a few were expressing regret that they could not come, Bob was crying about the kind thoughts by the sender.
Believe it or not, Bob has a yeast infection now around his stomach wound. Females know all about this. Since he is on an antibiotic, the yeast in his body is not being kept "in check", so it grows ramped. He started another antibiotic for that. It is in pill form though.
Guess what? I start the new drug that helps people with MS walk faster. It will be delivered on Thursday. Woo-hoo!

Who da thunk?...

I should have seen this coming. Bob has lost an entire year, but in his mind, he hasn't lost a day. He knows that it is 2010, but when I talk to him about clients and trading, he swears he just spoke the them, as if it were yesterday. He gets angry with me when I tell him that it has been a year or more since he's spoken to a client. It's an argument not worth arguing.
He's doing great with watching charts and keeping up with the quotes. We're working on reading all the news articles that play a role in making the quotes go up or down. Being a commodities broker is hard mental work. I'm not sure I have enough brain space for it all. :-)

RSVP if you don't mind...

Church, napping, sitting on the deck, grilling steak, that's what this Sunday contained? Bob told his sons that he was having a very "laid back" day today. He said he was at a resort. It's nice to hear that he thinks our house is a resort. However, once again, we got in an argument, because he thought and convinced himself that we were in northern Minnesota. I had to get a map out, show him mail with our address, and show him his driver's license. He still didn't believe me. Mail from the IRS wasn't convincing either. He said that anything from the government is a lie. Ugh...what a challenge. I finally conceded. I told Bob that he can be anywhere he wants to be.

Oregon or Iowa?

AAAAA...Bob gave me a scare today. He looked outside and said that we lived in Iowa. Well, that wasn't something new. he's been saying that for months upon months. What scared me was that he said he wants to move back to Iowa. I helped him understand that even though I grew up in PA, where it snows a lot, I hate snow, and he couldn't ride his Harley year-round in Iowa. I told him if he wants snow, we can drive to the snow any day.
ahhh...thank goodness, he agreed. So, for today, we're not moving. :-)
Everyday, we plan on getting the wii out to begin wiiFit. So far, it hasn't happened. Our intentions are good. Aren't they? Yes!
Memory-wise, we reviewed a commodities training manual published by the Chicago Board of Trade. I thought the other day I was finally understanding the whole concept. Now, today, I don't think I understand much. Back to the high stress level. Ugh...
Zachary plays the trumpet with the choir tomorrow in church. Keep him in your thoughts. Also, some of the choir men/friends are going to help Bob walk up the steps into the choir loft so he can sing with the basses instead of sitting alone in front of the choir. I know he's going to cry.
